Interpretive Communications Training

Tim Merriman and Lisa Brochu are both National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Certified Interpretive Trainers, which means that they have been through a rigorous peer-reviewed process to certify their abilities as trainers in interpretive communications and strategies.

In addition to providing customized options (see below), they are both certified to teach NAI’s Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) and Host (CIH) courses at your site. In fact, not only can they teach the courses, but Tim and Lisa were the designers of the course and wrote the original curriculum units, workbooks, and text for both courses. They have been teaching CIG since it began in 2000 and CIH since it began in 2002. For twelve years (2001-2012), they were the sole trainers of all CIG and CIH Certified Interpretive Trainers as well. You won’t find a more experienced training team for these classes anywhere.

The CIG workshop is designed for those with little or no experience or formal education in interpretation. It requires approximately 32 hours to complete and can be run over four consecutive days or in a different format to meet your schedule needs. The curriculum includes:

            • history and definition of interpretation

            • philosophy, science, and research that supports interpretation as a successful communication strategy

            • using interpretation to meet management objectives

            • designing thematic programs and experiences

            • guiding tips and other program techniques

Individuals who wish to be certified must successfully complete the following:

            • 32-hour workshop

            • NAI-provided literature review of books on interpretation

            • thematic program outline

            • delivery of a 10-minute thematic program

Successful applicants receive an exclusive cloisonné CIG pin and certificate issued by NAI. Certification lasts four years and must be renewed through NAI with a renewal fee and proof of at least 40 hours continuing education during the four-year period.

The CIH workshop is designed for those who have public contact in interpretive settings but do not give formal programs or tours. It is ideal for receptionists, sales clerks, maintenance workers, security or law enforcement personnel, animal keepers, and roving interpreters. Participants in this course will learn how to turn every conversation into an interpretive opportunity that supports the mission of the organization. It requires approximately 16 hours to complete and is best run in two consecutive days. The curriculum includes:

            • customer service based on creating long-term relationships

            • informal interpretation and communication techniques

Individuals who wish to be certified must successfully complete the following:

            • 16-hour workshop

            • NAI-provided literature review of books on interpretation (short version)

            • Video exam (looking at scenarios at interpretive sites and selecting the best possible response to a stem question)

Successful applicants receive an exclusive cloisonné CIH pin and certificate issued by NAI. Certification lasts four years and must be renewed through NAI with a renewal fee and proof of at least 40 hours continuing education during the four-year period.

What does it cost?

Trainer fees can be negotiated, but certification application fees (if desired) and workshop materials are set by NAI and cannot be changed. NAI’s current prices are:

            • certification application - $80 for NAI members; $135 nonmembers (optional)

            • membership in NAI if purchased with certification - $50 (optional)

            • workbook and textbook - $25 (required)

Certification is always optional and the training curriculum can be provided without the certification component if desired. In such a case, only the trainer fees and $25 workbook/textbook fee would apply.
